The Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is the oldest sporting event in the United States.

Churchill Downs is the name of the race track that holds the Kentucky Derby every year on the first Saturday of the year.

The Kentucky Derby.

Mine that Bird wins on a rail trip with Calvin Borel in the saddle.  His odds?  50 to 1.

The Kentucky Derby (winner-Mine that Bird) has been run and next comes the Preakness Stakes and finally the Belmont Stakes.

Just a few days ago Calvin Borel stated he wanted off Mine that Bird to instead be the jockey on the Kentucky Oaks Winner, filly Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness Stakes.

It’s too bad that Mine that Bird is a gelding.  The Triple Crown is racing at it best and for the best horses to go to the breeding shed.  I don’t believe geldings should be allowed to race in this prestigious race.

There are many who have said that the filly, Rachel Alexandra, who won the Kentucky Oaks by 20 lengths should have raced in the Derby.  She is such a fast horse that she ran the last quarter in 12 seconds.  That is crazy fast time.

The Kentucky Derby.

What makes the Triple Crown so special is that horses that race about once every month are asked to run the Kentucky Derby, then just two week later the Preakness and then go a mile and a half on a track that is exactly one and one half miles long.

This years winner was a little horse that likes the mud named Mine that Bird out of Birdstone.  Last years winner of the Derby was Big Brown.
