Fountain of Youth Stakes is a grade 2 prep race for the Florida Derby At Hallendale, Florida

In Hallandale Beach, Florida the Fountain of Youth stakes are held every year.

This grade two race is a prep race for The Florida Derby held this year on Saturday, March 28.   We start to see the colts and maybe a filly or two that will compete or at least try to compete for the Kentucky Derby.

The Fountain of Youth Stakes is a one mile race held at Gulfstream Park.

This years winner was Quality Road who ran the race in 1:35:01 on a fast surface.  Quality Road won the race 4 lengths in front of Theregoesjojo and Beethoven who finished third.

Quality Road's win was just his third career start and a very pleased Edward Evans and Trainer Jimmy Jerkins picked up $150,000 for the victory.

This colt is going pretty darn good with two wins and one second place finish in his 3 career starts.

Trainer Jerkens said Quality Road has a couple of options open to him.  One is the  Florida Derby (G1) on March 28 at Gulfstream and the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) on April 4 at Aqueduct.

KOBLA

Quality Road is out of the Strawberry Road mare, Kobla, a sister to Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, Ajina.

Kobla was sired by Strawberry Road, a winner of important Group One races in Australia and the 1983 Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year.

This substantial pedigree goes back to  Raise a Native, through Mr. Prospector and Alydar.  I have always loved Raise a Native horses and of course Mr. Prospector.
